Windows 11 Gains Copilot Features

December 14, 2023

Copilot is an AI-powered coding assistant developed by GitHub and powered by OpenAI's GPT-3 technology. It's designed to assist developers by suggesting code snippets, offering documentation, and providing contextual code insights as they write code. It's like having an experienced developer by your side, ready to help with coding challenges, saving time and reducing errors. But it goes much farther than development and work. It can help you with things like finding a recipe or making changes to common Windows settings as well.

To get started and test Copilot out you need to be running Windows 11 23H2. If you are on a older version head over to Windows update and see if a update is waiting for you.

You can activate Copilot by pressing the Winkey + C this will slide out the side bar where you can ask Copilot for suggestions or questions.

The update doesn't stop there. You also gain a feature in Windows Paint to generate AI images. If you have used the Firefly plugin for Adobe Photoshot it's much like that but free!

Enter what you want to create and it will generate it on the fly.

The snipping tool has a overhaul as well with AI. You can take a snippet of text and use AI to extract the text. Or redact any sensitive information it finds such as phone numbers.

The last highlighted feature is improvements to Windows Backup. If you use One Drive and are signed into 2 devices at the same time you transfer your files, apps, settings and passwords from one to the other. This will come in handy when you replace or upgrade to another PC and makes it easy to be up and running.

Copilot for WIndows 11 is still in it's early stages so hopefully this is just the beginning of great things to come with AI in Windows.
